WCAG 2.1 vs 2.2: which version does your organization need?

2026-10-08 00:00:00 +0000

The DOJ's Title II rule adopts WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard for public entities. WCAG 2.2 is the newer version. This guide explains how the two relate and which one to build toward. ## The short answer TODO: State that the Title II rule names 2.1 AA, and that 2.2 builds on 2.1, so meeting 2.2 AA also covers 2.1 AA (except 4.1.1 Parsing, which 2.2 removed). Confirm this wording against the W3C text before publishing. ## What WCAG 2.2 adds TODO: List the nine new success criteria, grouped by what they affect (focus, pointer input, forms and login, help). ## Which version should you plan for? TODO: Public entities under Title II: 2.1 AA is the legal minimum. Procurement and private-sector clients: ask which version contracts name. Recommend building to 2.2 AA so nothing needs redoing later. ## How to check your current status TODO: Point to a manual audit, VPAT/ACR review, and the checklist in the article.
